SURFING
COSTA RICO

There are many good places to surf in this Central American country.  It is generaly hospitable to Americans and travelers, but as in any country stay out of the slums. When there a good south swell, check out Boca Barranca.   But lay caution as the Puntarenas area is not the cleanest.
Jaco is not a particularly a great place to surf but can get a wave infrequently, but everybody find it an enjoyable place to hangout.

Two hours from the capital of San Jose south of the Port of Punta Rena is Boca Barranca. Considered to be the best left break in the country.   An offshore break and a large swell takes the wave best.   Often crowded when going off.

One hour south is Playa Hermosa, just south of the town Jaco,  a powerful beach break. Many reports of car vandalism so it is best not to leave the vehicle unattended or valuables while you surf.

To the north of San Jose five hours is Playa Tamarindo and often has good waves.   November to March are best and July is the rainy season.
