SURFING
BAJA NORTH

The weakest time of the year to surf Baja is in the Spring... the best odds are if one gets lucky with an early south swell as opposed to a late winter northwest swell.   The strong winter swells are over and it's time to gear up for the summer madness.    To add to the slim chance of a decent swell are unfavorable nasty swell trashing winds.    With the cold water of winter still up the coast and the winds... well it's not spelling paradise.   Definitely bring a longboard for any wave action, and don't forget the fishing gear.   Windsurfing is probably your best choice for Spring time in Baja.... and don't forget a ligth wetsuit of around 2/3 millimeters.    If you are camping be prepared to have a good stong wind tent.   One advantage is the lack of crowds in the Spring, so all is not lost for a vacation trip just to get away from it all.   Things can get nasty near the border so the further south you go past Ensenada the better off you will be to avoid hassels.
Baja Malibu:  15 miles south of the border, a summer and winter wave, best at medium to low tide.   Not particularily a beginner surf spot with heaving barrells.  Off the toll road and on the north side of the Baja Malibu development.
Calaia:  south of Rosarito Beach about six miles on Highway One.   A right point break works best on a south swell and often large north swells.  Beware of the sharp rocks getting in and out of the water.
Salsipuedes: North of Ensenada a beefy right break with a mean bowling peak.   Breaking on any swell direction but to get the point to break you'll need some size of six foot or better.   Fifty one miles south of California border on the pay road exit at the Salsipuedes ramp.
San Miguel:  a hefty right breaking on a strong west and northwest swell... low tide coming in really barrels this place.   Just eight miles from Ensenada...
Punta San Jose:  south of Ensenada... a series of reef breaks that connect on just the correct swell.   South swell or a really big west vector works this place like magic.  About 30 miles south of Ensenada so load up on the major provisions when passing through Ensenada.
