A very rare but unfortunately too common disease caused by a bacteria known as "necrotizing fasciitis" destroys tissues underlying the skin. This tissue death, called necrosis or gangrene, spreads rapidly. This disease can be fatal in as little as 12 to 24 hours. The bacteria infected and killed two in Worcester county in 2003. An Ocean Pines gentleman contracted the same disease and unfortunately lost his leg in 2001. In the process of diagnosis, the Ocean Pines gentleman ascerts that an Atlantic General emergency doctor failed to recognize the disease and act accordingly. Richard Landon of Ocean Pines near Ocean City Maryland sued the hospital, Dr. Zorn and Emergency Services Associates for $2.7 million and lost. The jury had decided that the doctor and the hospital acted accordingly. The disease is usually aquired through a cut, small open wound, minor skin injury or abrasion. The bacteria grows and releases toxins that kill tissue. It digests materials in the tissue that allows the bacteria to spread rapidly, often leading to respiratory failure, heart failure, low blood pressure and renal failure. The disease spreeds extreemly fast and thus is often mis-diagnosed when first observed as just a bruise. |
