Birkenstock Highway

"Ocean City High Way here we come..." "Doo,dah.. doodah... doodah-day..."

We'll bring our tents and build our campfires, doohday...
we'll dance all night in the highway... doodah... doohdah-day...

In the morning will sell Birkenstock sandles to everyone.
We'll call it the Birkenstock Highway... we'll all have beads in our hair....
Starbucks on every block... yeah.... that's it...

OK... we know the "highway" has some problems but a lot of it has to do with the people taking responsibility for their driving, and pedestrians paying more attention to hazards and crosswalks.

Hold 'er back there Ms. Nancy......  aka. "Bull-dozer Betty" for her want to attack every beach project with earth moving iron  ...

and lets keep the Highway a through way and not another parking lot.
One recent proposal is to rip up the six lanes now in place along Ocean Highway, ... and strip it down to four lanes.... with new sidewalks dedicated bike lanes etc, etc. .     Thus restricting motor vehicle traffic during peak money months.

Anybody that knows, knows, about congestion north of Rehoboth on a rainy day...
reducing traffic lanes will only be to the detriment of Ocean City.

There can be improvements to the existing markings, the physical structure (no potholes in the bike lane etc) the shared bus-bike lane. But what you are really talking about when you get right down to it is a through-way for pedestrian/bike traffic.

Now we are talking about something... there could be a variety of alternative forms of traffic and traffic routes to give a right of way to pedestrian traffic..

1.)  Extend the boardwalk
2.)  Combine extended boardwalk with new right of way boundaries oceanside of Ocean Highway, utilizing alleys (improving, beautifying etc..).
3.)  New right of ways by extending sidewalk away from Ocean Highway.
4.)  Aerial Passage and walkways at high traffic zones.
