Maryland's Assateague Island  Ponies going up on the block.

On Assateague Island, the Virginia side, every year the supervised island ponies are selectively moved across the bay, known as the Assategue Island Pony Swim.   They are auctioned off and the proceeds are given to the Chincoteague Island Fire Department.
This reduces the heard through wildlife management keeping the heard in balance, obviously because there are no natural preditors to otherwise keep the heard in balance.
A win, win, situation.

In Maryland they let the ponies run free and are unmanged.    They shoot the mares with contreceptives in an attempt to control the heard.    Very similar to the liberal school system and their attempt at handing out condoms to the children... although the ponies could be better educated, and have more sense.

Apparently the over population of the ponies on the Maryland side of Assateague Island is destroying the ecosystem, which is very delicate, especially concerning the marsh area where numerous sub species attempt to thrive.    The Park Service on the Maryland side has now taken under consideration the sale of the ponies to manage the heard.  In addition to the impact of the ponies on the ecosystem is the over population of the Sika Deer (a miniature Japenese Elk), which were introduced in the 1920's to the Island.   Comments by the Park service assure the public that the ponies will not be sent to the slaughter house.   No mention of the fate of the Japenese Elk.
