Water temperatures... are you crazy.... its freezing out there! Some people are saying its near 60 degrees...no way.. Just because the buoys are saying its 59, that certainly doesn't mean the coastal temps are the same. I will stand corrected if proven wrong.

you're not proven wrong, but why are you using the buoy reports when this site and malibus gives you a daily reading of the water temp as is is at the beach and not miles out where the gulf stream influences the temp? as a rule of thumb, oc is usually fullsuit and boots until early june and springsuits really aren't that comfortable until late june.

Hi ya gang!
Well... I too have been wondering about the water temps being shown by the buoys. So.... yesterday morning I went and took the temperature in the surf.. and much to my surprise got a reading of 63 degrees. Whoa! I almost had a hard time believing it. Its probably a little lower than that, about 59 or so. But that can change. If you do look at the buoy 15 miles off of Fenwick, the readings are fluctuating from 55 to 59... so why is this?

As you all know the Gulf Stream is a river of hot(warm) water that meanders along the coast. It moves back and forth and has eddies and currents just like a river. Often these eddies can break off and swirl towards the coast, giving us a warm "blip."
The Delaware Bay, just north of us, warms up quickly. When we have a north to south current this will also influence the coast temps.

[Lisa] It's possible the last day you went out it was very likely in the low 50s, and then a few days later a lot warmer. Anyways... 50's is better than 40's, and average 60 degree water temps are not to far away.

Take care! Mr. Breezes
