Should CLOAKING BE ILLEGAL?

Are Cloaking techniques the HEROINE
of the Internet Promotion schemes and Internet Marketer's methods?
If a person pays a fee today for number 6 on the list,
what will they pay tomorrow... to keep their "high" going?
Who controls CLOAKING?
What will evolve out of cloaking methods in the next generation of Internet Marketing Schemes and Scams?
If Internet Marketers can CLOAK information in... Can they CLOAK you out?
Why would a search engine permit CLOAKING METHODS, when their listings are proprietary?
Do Search Engines sell their proprietary information to the highest Cloaking Bidder?

And for the techies'... Strange 500 server errors in your logs? Perl CGI scripts don't work for a period of time... but nobody at the server level can answer your questions... Stange hard drive failures at the server level? Your listing placement goes down and down and down... but the same people remain at the top of the list only to be replaced by the webpages they are creating, on the same servers as yours, or partner friends at DMOZ

When you read the following information... notice the terminology of words like
"hide," .... "hidden," .... "prying eyes."

If a search engine is a listing of content and pertenent information... then the list stands for itself.

Once you start reviewing search engines in a particular market... Why then do the "top" search engines return the same lists?

THE HEROINE
OF THE INTERNET MARKETERS AND
INTERNET MARKETERS....

Search Engine Placement Service

SEARCH ENGINE CLOAKING

Why use Search Engine Cloaking?
Because when you have a great placement, you want to keep it.
But the nature of the Internet is that under normal circumstances, the source code for any web page can be easily read by anyone, including your competitors.

All they need to do, is to create a page similar to yours and submit it to the search engines. You do all the work (or pay for it) and they get a great position.

HOW IT WORKS

Using cloaking, two gateway pages are created: a visible page and a hidden page for each search engine. All gateway pages are housed on our server.

Visible Pages

This is the page we want the visitor to see. This is the one with a link to your site. Just like any other page on the web, the source code is available to anyone.

The visible gateway pages can be modified to reflect your corporate identity or colors. They have no effect on the placement.

There are no optimization strategies on this page. If someone were to look at it (which they can) they would not be able to figure out how your page got to the top!

Hidden Pages

Hidden pages are the pages we want the search engines to see and to index. These are the pages that we optimize with keyword density, meta tags, ALT tags, etc.

These pages cannot be seen by visitors. The great advantage is that your competition cannot detect the optimization procedures that were used to get the page well listed. They cannot be copied. And they can't use the same ideas to leap-frog over you.

Cloaking Scripts

Cloaking involves using a series of computer instructions (a script) to tell the web server to hide your meta tags and keywords from everyone except the search engine spiders. The Active Server Pages Script example shown for Feeding Spiders could be modified into a simple cloaking script. ASP is a primarily used on NT Servers running IIS. Many web sites are hosted on servers running other CGI-enabled servers. Those sites will need scripts written in one of the CGI languages.

Cloaking Scripts can be used appropriately to protect your hard work and investment in keywords and promotion techniques from the prying eyes of competitors. There's nothing more frustrating than spending many hours yourself or paying someone else for their time to fine-tune and tweak and test and get your site in the top results on search engines, only to have someone view source your page and steal your techniques. Cloaking Scripts can protect you. However, like all powerful things, Cloaking Scripts can be abused in an unethical manner. It is not appropriate to show the Search Engine Spiders a list of non-revelant keywords or pages that are markedly different from what you show to the browsing public.

http://www.techdevelopers.com/submit/techcloak/ has a free cloaking script in CGI and offers a user-support forum. You can download their script from them or from Texas Star Net's FTP site.

http://www.spiderhunter.com/ has an excellent tutorial on cloaking scripts and also offers free cloaking scripts written in PERL.
